Top 16 of 2016

December 30, 2016

This year may not have been the best year for everything, but we had a great year in books. Not every book on this list came out in 2016, but all of them were read by us this year. Here is our list of  our most heart pounding, thigh clenching, gut wrenching, swoonworthy, side-splitting, mindf@cking reads of 2016!

 TOP 16 of 2016

 Paper Princess by Erin Watt
There will always be a special place in my heart for the Royals. In so many books I read, it seems like only one or two aspects of them shine. The characters might be phenomenal, but the plot leaves much to be desired. The story might be exciting, but you just can't seem to connect with the characters. That is not the case with this book or this series. The story captivated me, the writing mesmerized me, and the characters swept me off my feet. Hands down one of my favorite books ever. This series wins the award for Most Addictive series of 2016. I also award the authors Queens of the Cliffhanger.

From strip clubs and truck stops to southern coast mansions and prep schools, one girl tries to stay true to herself.

These Royals will ruin you…

Ella Harper is a survivor—a pragmatic optimist. She’s spent her whole life moving from town to town with her flighty mother, struggling to make ends meet and believing that someday she’ll climb out of the gutter. After her mother’s death, Ella is truly alone.

Until Callum Royal appears, plucking Ella out of poverty and tossing her into his posh mansion among his five sons who all hate her. Each Royal boy is more magnetic than the last, but none as captivating as Reed Royal, the boy who is determined to send her back to the slums she came from.

Reed doesn’t want her. He says she doesn’t belong with the Royals.

He might be right.

Wealth. Excess. Deception. It’s like nothing Ella has ever experienced, and if she’s going to survive her time in the Royal palace, she’ll need to learn to issue her own Royal decrees.

 Eminent Love by Leddy Harper
A true story inspired book that should come with a warning, "DANGER!!!NEEDS A LOT OF DAMN TISSUES, A STRONG HEART AND WATER TO PREVENT YOURSELF FROM CHOKING UP ON YOUR OWN SOB!" I love this book so much because it speaks highly of Eminent Love that never dies. That even through pain, heartaches, loss...happiness and love is still possible. Because in real life, it's not about  a fairytale ending but about healing and mending of life, soul and heart.

Life doesn’t always start with once upon a time.
Love doesn’t always end with happily ever after.

After spending five years with the love of my life, I did nothing to stop her from walking away. She had her reasons to leave. I had my reasons to stay. But a year later, the realization of loss hits me, and I’ll stop at nothing to fix it. I leave everything behind to drive across the country to win her back, and I refuse to accept anything other than fulfilling old promises.

But the only certainty in life is: nothing is as expected.

The most valuable lessons don’t often revolve around a fairytale ending—frequently, they come from hurt and healing. They come from the kind of personal growth love offers. The mending of your heart, your soul, and your life. And every once in a while, you find the greatest gifts in the packages you never expected to open.

Sweet Jayne by K. Webster
This made it to my top books of 2016 for a few reasons. First, it introduced me to one of my new favorite authors, K. Webster. Second, it introduced me to the world of dark romance. Third, it was an amazing dark and twisted story! This book will not be for everyone, because it contains abuse throughout the entirety of the book. However, if you like the dark stuff, don't miss out on this one! It is so gripping, suspenseful, and intense that it will have you hooked from the very first page! My mind was racing the whole time as I was trying to figure out what was going on, and what was going to happen next! After I read this, I wanted to read everything K. Webster has ever written. This wins the award for Favorite Standalone Novel of 2016, and the author is already crowned the Queen of  Dark. -Jessica

Nadia Jayne’s world is full of villains.

Kasper thinks he hates her.
Donovan thinks he loves her.
Logan thinks he owns her.

Sweet Jayne is a complicated girl…

She needs Kasper.
She hides from Donovan.
She has a plan for Logan.

But maybe complicated Jayne isn’t so sweet after all…
In fact, she might just be the biggest villain of them all.

WARNING: Story contains dark taboo themes and violence both sexual and physical which could trigger emotional distress in reader.

Written In The Scars by Adriana Locke
- It's a beautifully written, highly emotional, addictive, engrossing and realistic masterpiece of Adriana Locke to date! I was emotionally drained reading this book, the realness is legit and deeply moving. And the most important part? This book not just portrayed what love is all about in the real aspect but what life is all about.

 Falling in love is easy.

Falling out of love is the hardest thing in the world.

And Elin and Ty Whitt are terrible at it.

The first time the local basketball star smiled at Elin, she was a goner. It was just so damn easy to fall for the dark-haired hometown hero with his charming smile and strong, athletic build.

Thousands of sleepy smiles, aimless drives down country roads, and squeaks of the backdoor after a swing shift later, reality hits. And it hits hard. Falling in love was definitely the easy part. Watching it break apart was impossible.

Through the tears, the second-guesses, the memories of a life built together, the world keeps spinning. With each turn comes clarity and hope—sometimes in the form of a pair of muddy boots by the back door or from the words of a wise friend.

When Ty shows back up with a new found determination to put his family back together, Elin's torn between the fights of the past and the possibility of a new start. This is the man that holds her heart, the man she loves beyond anything else. But this is also the one person in the world that can cause her the most pain.

Life’s not always easy. Love’s not for the faint of heart. But with life comes lessons and Ty and Elin have the scars to prove it. But it's their love written in those scars that will hold them together … or break them apart.

 Feral Sins by Suzanne Wright
This is the first book in one of my favorite shifter series of all time, The Phoenix Pack series. This book is fun, entertaining, hilarious, and hot as hell. I didn't want to put it down once I started reading it. I particularly love the way Suzanne Wright writes her female characters in this series. They are strong, smart, sarcastic, and ballsy. No damsels in distress here! The male characters are pretty amazing, too. They are sexy alpha males that may act like cavemen sometimes, but they genuinely care about and respect each other, their mates, and the rest of their pack. This wins the award for Best Cast of Characters in a Paranormal Romance. The author wins the award for Queen of the Shifters.
When female wolf shifter Taryn Warner first encounters Trey Coleman, an alpha male wolf shifter with a dangerous reputation, she’s determined to resist his charms. After all, Trey—who was only fourteen when he defeated his own father in a duel, winning the right to be alpha of his pack—can’t have anything to offer the talented healer besides trouble, or so she thinks. Taryn finds herself drawn in by Trey’s forceful demeanor and arctic-blue eyes, and she eventually agrees to enter an uneasy alliance with him. If the two succeed in convincing their respective packs that they’ve chosen each other as mates, Trey will win valuable political allies, while Taryn will escape an odious arranged mating.
But there are a lot of potential pitfalls to this plan—including the very real possibility that the wolf shifters, overwhelmed by their growing attraction to each other, will be unable to maintain the clear heads needed to pull off the deception.
Empire by Rachel Van Dyken
A mafia story that is part of a series but could be read as standalone. One of my favorite in the series, this book took all my tears but left me so happy and in love my heart almost burst. It was addictive, raw and intense it left me breathless. RVD nailed this one and I love it dearly!

 I have lost everything.
My purpose.
My love.
My soul.
Death knocks on my door, I want to answer, but every time I reach for the handle--the promise I made her, brings me back.
So I breathe.
I live.
I hate.
And I allow the anger to boil beneath the surface of a perfectly indifferent facade.
I am broken, I dont want to be fixed.
One last trip to New York, one last chance to redeem a lost part of the mafia family. The Empire is crumbling and it's my job to fix it, my job to mend the pieces that were scattered over thirty years ago.
The only issue is, the only way to fix, is to do something I swore I'd never do again.
An arranged marriage.
Only this time.
I won't fall.
Or so help me God, I'll kill her myself.
My name is Sergio Abandanoto, you think you know my pain, my suffering, my anger, my hate--you have no idea.
I am the mafia.
I am the darkness.
Blood in. No out.

Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire
I know this book can be controversial, but I don't really care! This story is intense, sexy, engrossing, and above all, it makes you FEEL! I don't think there are words that can adequately express my love for this book. Just read it! If your heart doesn't melt out of your chest when Travis yells "WELL I BELONG TO YOU!," then you may not have one. This book wins for Most Intense Romance and Hottest Heart Stopping Hero. I name the author Queen of the Bad Boys. -Jessica

If Abby loses, she must live in Travis’s apartment for the same amount of time. Either way, Travis has no idea that he has met his match.

 Sweet Love by KC Lynn
A book with a perfect combination of hot alpha male who talks dirty and a sexy heroine. I fucking Love it to pieces. I cried my heart out and bawled like a baby. It brought so many emotions but will leave you happy, satisfied, contented and sooo fucking in love! This book is everything you dream of having! To sum up this book? It's romance at it's finest!

Two cups of a protective, dirty talkin’ alpha who loves his Cupcake.

One tablespoon of a sweet southern baker who loves her Sexy Sawyer, even when he’s being a hothead.

A slice of the past that shows up on their doorstep, turning their world upside down with a life-altering plea.

A dash of passion.

A pinch of heartache.

A sprinkle of hope.

Mix together in a large bowl, creating a difficult choice, a testing of one’s faith, and a man who will do anything to protect his family—even if it means accepting a decision that could result in losing the one he loves most.

Bake at 350° for a rich serving of life with a love that could withstand anything. Even the unthinkable.

A timeless recipe that is sure to fill your heart with a generous helping of sweet love.

This is a longer length novella that follows Sawyer and Grace’s journey after Sweet Temptation, book two in the Men of Honor series. It is told in dual POV, has an HEA, and no cliffhanger. Sweet Temptation should be read prior to this novella. It is recommended to read the other books in both the Men of Honor series and the Acts of Honor series as all the characters play recurring roles. However it’s not necessary.

Dark Prince by S. L. Jennings
This is the second book in one of my favorite paranormal romance series, The Dark Light. I love the entire series! This book was probably my favorite, but it was hard to pick. It is unique, interesting, emotional, and the sex scenes will set your kindle on fire! This book will gift you not one, but two of your new book boyfriends! If you love paranormal romance, do yourself a favor, and go one click the whole series now! You won't regret it! This book gets the award for Most Magical Men, and I name the author Queen of Steam. -Jessica

Dorian Skotos is Dark. And although that brand of sheer, unrelenting evil is a direct threat to her life, Gabriella is tragically in love with him.

Gabriella knew it was all too good to be true. The way his touch radiated electricity right to her core, the way his ice blue eyes somehow made panties drop involuntarily, how his sexy half-smile crumbled the barriers around her heart…Dorian was extraordinary in every way.

She ignored the alarm bells for the sake of pleasure and a little slice of peace from her mixed-up life. She thought that whatever he was, she could help him. Maybe even change him. But now that the proof of Dorian’s true identity and what he was sent for is staring her in the face, Gabriella can’t deny the inevitable. And confronting that truth could very well slaughter more than just her fragile heart.

Black Swan Affair by KL Kreig
I.Am.Flat.Out.Ruined by this book! Raw, full of angst, mind numbing, heart gripping and gut wrenching. This is Love Triangle like no other. And the characters??? Impossible not to love especially with a writing so exemplary!

“OMG what did I just read? This book... WOW!! It's been years since I read a book straight through. Yes, seven hours I was glued to the pages of this book. A yo-yo of emotions that left me breathless with every scene. Black Swan Affair is a must read!!” ~ Nashoda Rose, NYT and USA Today Bestselling Author

I’ve loved him as long as I can remember.

The gangly boy with big brown eyes and unruly hair who grew up into an intoxicating man. He wears scruff like he invented it and ambles with a swagger that makes panties drop.

Killian Shepard.

We grew up together. We played Ghost in the Graveyard. Had our own rock band. It didn’t matter that he was five years older than me. It didn’t matter that he looked at me as a kid sister even as I grew into woman. It didn’t even matter when he left me behind to go to college and start his adult life.

He’d be back.

He was always meant to be mine.

He came back, all right. But instead of smelling of promises, he stunk of betrayal. And he destroyed me—us—the day he married my sister instead of me.

So I did the only thing a girl like me in my position could do.

I got my revenge.

I married his brother, Kael.

Now we’re one big happy f*cking family.

Crow by A. Zavarelli
This book contains one of my favorite couples ever! My love for them is borderline ridiculous, and it isn't often that you find a book where you love the hero and the heroine equally. Crow is a sexy, possessive, alpha male, and MacKenzie is strong, sassy, and undeniably beautiful. They are both loyal, passionate, bold, and fearless, and when these two get together, they set the pages on fire! This book will also always be the one that cemented my status as a mafia romance fan. The characters are badass, the romance is hot, and the plot is action packed! The whole Boston Underworld series is absolutely amazing! Buy them all, read them, and you can thank me later! This book wins the award for Best Badass Couple, and I name the author Queen of Mafia Romance. -Jessica

He’s a killer. A mobster.

The last man on earth I’d ever want to be with. I won’t lose my head just because he’s hot, Irish, and has a wicked accent to boot.

He’s one of the only leads in my best friend’s disappearance, and I don’t trust him.

So I’ve got a few rules in mind when it comes to dealing with Lachlan Crow.

1.Keep a clear head and don’t get distracted.
2.Do what’s necessary and never forget why you’re there.
3.Never, and I mean never, fall for him.

Fourth and final rule?

Throw out the book altogether. Because the rules don’t apply when it comes to the Irish mafia.

It was only supposed to be temporary, but now Lachlan thinks he owns me. He says he’s not letting me go.

And I believe him.

I don’t know who she is. I don’t know why she’s here.

But if it’s my attention she wants, she has it.

The Russians want her dead, and now it’s up to me to look out for her. This girl is trouble. A distraction I can’t afford.

So why have I already decided she’s mine?

I’ve claimed her and there’s no going back now.

This is a full-length standalone novel full of hot Irish bad boys with accents. Steamy and dark mafia themes throughout. HEA included.

A Love Letter To Whiskey by Kandi Steiner
-Addictive.Intoxicating. The reference with whiskey is gravitating me towards the book. I was drunk with every word and line I savoured and devoured like it was my next breath.  A Love Letter To Whiskey really broke my heart into pieces and it hurt like a mothafucker! It was so raw and so intense, so emotional it's pure torture.

It’s crazy how fast the buzz comes back after you’ve been sober for so long.

Whiskey stood there, on my doorstep, just like he had one year before. Except this time, there was no rain, no anger, no wedding invitation — it was just us.

It was just him — the old friend, the easy smile, the twisted solace wrapped in a glittering bottle.

It was just me — the alcoholic, pretending like I didn’t want to taste him, realizing too quickly that months of being clean didn’t make me crave him any less.

But we can’t start here.

No, to tell this story right, we need to go back.

Back to the beginning.

Back to the very first drop.

This is my love letter to Whiskey. I only hope he reads it.

The Killing Season by Meg Collett
This is the second book in what is, without a doubt, one of the most unique paranormal series I have ever had the pleasure of reading. I rated the entire series thus far 5 stars. I don't think I have ever done that before. That's how good it is! The only reason I picked the second book is because I couldn't include the entire series. Lol! I love the paranormal genre, so I thought that I had read about most every paranormal being known to man. I was so excited to come across one I knew nothing about. This series is about the aswang and those that hunt them. I don't really want to say too much more about it, because I think that is all you need to know going into it.  I will read anything this author writes without hesitation, and I recommend that you do, too. Seriously, if you like paranormal fantasy or paranormal romance, then you're welcome for introducing you to one of your new favorite series! :D This book wins the award for Most Original Story, and I name the author Queen of the Most Magnificent Monsters.

In the far Alaskan north, there are places the winter sun cannot reach. Places where light won’t shine for months. These are the places we hunt the monsters who feed on fear.

So begins the Killing Season.

For the next sixty-five days, we will face the darkness. Some will hunt the aswangs in the ever night, but I, Ollie Andrews, am here for one purpose: to search for answers to my past.

They told us to fear the arctic tundra and the monsters hiding in the deep, dark shadows. But, locked inside a base known for driving even the best hunters mad, I fear it’s not the outside we should worry about, but the deepest, darkest parts of ourselves.

The real monsters are within.

When a brutal murder brings with it the secrets of Fear University—and the threat of an unknown killer on the loose—we all must fight to stay alive. But with madness and paranoia setting in during a whiteout snowstorm, all we can do is hope we don’t destroy ourselves before the sun finally rises again. Because no matter how hard we fight, reality will always threaten to tear us apart.

And when faced with the most terrible of truths, even the strongest break.

 Major Love by Kate Stewart
-Perfectly portrayed "Do what you love and give it your very best. Whether it’s business or baseball, or the theater or any field. If you don’t love what you’re doing and you can’t give it your best, get out of it. Life is too short. You will be an old man before you know it."
This book is more than just a sports romance story with the right combination of angst, humor and heat coupled with a perfect chemistry of characters. And the best part? It got MAJOR FEELS that feels so alive and real.

"It was a night I could never forget."

"When it came to women, I swore I was done with wishful thinking. Ball and my coaching career were all that mattered."

"I reminded him it wasn't."

"She was everything I was afraid of."

"He was everything I'd ever wanted."

"She was fire—an irresistible piece of southern heaven that I couldn't stay away from.

"He was smoke that clouded me in every imaginable way."

"And the sex . . ."

"Dear God, the sex . . ."

"I fell hard, and she gave me hell at every turn."

"I made a promise I was hell bent on keeping."

"And you kept it."

"Hell yes I did."

"F*ckin' A."

This is War, Baby by K. Webster
There is a reason that this author is on this list more than once. I am completely obsessed with her writing! The woman is a dark genius! What I wouldn't give to be inside of her head for just one day! This book begins with seventeen year old Bailey on the receiving end of a certain sexual act, trying desperately to enjoy it despite her sweet boyfriend's inexperience, when a masked man barges into her room and kidnaps her. After that, I was hooked! You will experience a whole spectrum of emotions while reading this. Some of them you will expect and some you won't. This is the first book in a series, and there is no doubt in my mind that you will be diving right into the next book when you are done with this one! If you are a lover of all things dark, this is a must read!! Dark, twisted, heartwarming, and emotional, this is my favorite book by K. Webster book to date! This book wins for Best Broken Hero and Craziest Villain, and I name the author Queen of the Crazies. -Jessica

My life had a plan. Until he invaded it and stole it all away. My captor took me and I became a pawn.

His strategy changed and he sent me away to WAR, because money is everything in this world.

In my WAR, though, I found peace.

I couldn’t help but find love where I least expected it, with a man who lived a battle every day of his life
…all inside his head.

But then my captor came back for me.
Yet, this time, battle lines had been drawn and I was protected.

So we thought.
Even though my WAR was raging,
my captor would fight to the death.

The good guys always win, right?
Not always.

All’s fair in love and WAR, right?
Not this time.

This is War, Baby is a dark romance. A really dark one. So dark you’re going to wish you had a flashlight to see yourself to the end and someone to hold your hand. Human trafficking, dubious consent, and strong sexual themes that could trigger emotional distress are found in this story. This story is NOT for everyone.

EL DIABLO by M.Robinson
Want a book that will test your sanity? Look no more because EL DIABLO is the perfect book for you. It's addicting, engrossing and would literally fuck your mind and emotions over the taboo feels, so sinful yet feels so right. And the angst! Holy gracious to the nth level!!! It will leave you begging and wanting for more. READ.THIS.BOOK. It was so intense,so raw, so hot, so powerful and so twisted. It has all the feels. It was everything I never thought it would be and then MORE!

 I was ruthless.
I was feared.
I had sacrificed. Myself. Her. Everything...

Living in a world where I was worth more dead than alive was a choice. I was a bad man, never claimed to be anything else. I’ve done things I’m not proud of. Seen things that can’t be unseen. I’ve caused pain that I can’t undo.
It was all my choice.
Every decision.
Every order.
Right and wrong never mattered.
Until her.
She was under my protection, until she became my obsession.
But who was going to save her...

From. Me. The devil himself.

Fate brought us together. Destiny destroyed us.

Honorable Mention:

Scoring Wilder by R.S. Grey
The book is awarded Best Romantic Comedy, and I name the author Queen of Comedy. This book is laugh out loud hilarious, super steamy, and so much fun. I recommend this to everyone.

What started out as a joke— seduce Coach Wilder—soon became a goal she had to score.

With Olympic tryouts on the horizon, the last thing nineteen-year-old Kinsley Bryant needs to add to her plate is Liam Wilder. He's a professional soccer player, America's favorite bad-boy, and has all the qualities of a skilled panty-dropper.

• A face that makes girls weep – check.
• Abs that can shred Parmesan cheese (the expensive kind) – check.
• Enough confidence to shift the earth’s gravitational pull – double check.

Not to mention Liam is strictly off limits . Forbidden. Her coaches have made that perfectly clear. (i.e. “Score with Coach Wilder anywhere other than the field and you’ll be cut from the team faster than you can count his tattoos.”) But that just makes him all the more enticing…Besides, Kinsley's already counted the visible ones, and she is not one to leave a project unfinished.

Kinsley tries to play the game her way as they navigate through forbidden territory, but Liam is determined to teach her a whole new definition for the term “team bonding.”

King by T. M. Frazier
This gritty, action packed, sexy, suspense filled story began my love affair with the King Series and made me a certified super fan of T.M. Frazier. I could not pick my favorite of the series. Since I know a book in this series will wind up on the most anticipated reads of 2017 list, I decided to wait to gush about it until then. This book is awarded Most Memorable Secondary Character, and I name the author Queen of the Anti-Heroes.

Homeless. Hungry. Desperate.

Doe has no memories of who she is or where she comes from.

A notorious career criminal just released from prison, King is someone you don’t want to cross unless you’re prepared to pay him back in blood, sweat, sex or a combination of all three.

King’s future hangs in the balance. Doe’s is written in her past. When they come crashing together, they will have to learn that sometimes in order to hold on, you have to first let go.
