3.5 stars Benton King, a wealthy Mississippi lawyer, gets the surprise of his life when he walks into his father’s office one morning to find him dead via a bullet wound to the head. His father, a well-liked member of the community, owns the law firm where they both work and leads a relatively drama free life. The fact that not much seems to be missing from the building and Mr. King’s lack of known enemies makes his murder more than a little perplexing. Arabella Matthews, the detective on the case, is forced to accept help from King after he gets himself deputized by the sheriff’s department. He is determined to help find the person responsible for killing his father. Along the way, Arabella finds out there is more to Benton than meets the eye. He isn’t just an arrogant rich man like she originally thought. He becomes an asset in the investigation, and he treats Arabella with nothing but care and respect. When Arabella brings Benton to her house to check on her daughter, Vivi, he learns that she is a single mother that works hard to provide for her child and sick mother. He tries to talk to her about her personal life, but she shuts him down telling him that he could never understand what it’s like to be her. Aside from their obvious differences, Arabella already has a wall erected around her heart that Vivi’s abusive father is responsible for. She isn’t about to let Benton in no matter how bad she wants to. Besides, there is a killer on the loose that needs her full attention. Not long after King’s father’s death, bodies started dropping left and right. Not only were they looking for a killer, but they had to try to keep themselves breathing in the process. Life and death situations have a way of bringing people together, and this one is no different. Will Arabella let Benton in enough to show her that a relationship with him is worth the risk to her heart? Will they both even remain alive long enough to explore that option? The Elder by Celia Aaron is an intriguing mystery with a slight touch of romance that will keep you guessing until the end. All of the characters besides the obvious "bad guys" are likable. Arabella is a strong, capable heroine that you can’t help but respect and admire. Benton is handsome, smart, loving, and protective of not only Arabella but also his family. I loved Arabella’s partner, Logan, and especially Benton’s brother, Porter. Both provided much needed comic relief throughout the story. The only reason I couldn’t rate this any higher is because I expected a hot romantic suspense novel. What I got (for the most part) was a straight up mystery, and unfortunately, that affected my overall enjoyment. Despite that, Celia Aaron is a go to author for me, and that hasn’t changed. I’ll still read everything that she publishes without hesitation, and I hope you will, too! She is an amazing writer, and I look forward to seeing what she comes up with next! I recommend this one to readers that enjoy a good small town mystery! |
