From USA Today & Wall Street Journal bestselling author Michelle Heard, writing as MA Heard, comes a new, full-length Dystopian Romance novel.

Over the past four decades, the dome over our Ecocity has protected us from the deviants living in the forbidden territory. Since the great war ended, our lives have consisted of virtue and order.

Once a year, seven people are sent out to the forbidden lands to see if there are any deviants worth saving. None have returned, only increasing people's fear of what lies beyond the safe border of the dome.

When I’m chosen as a crusader, the world, as I know it, is ripped from under my feet. In the forbidden territory, I learn things I never dreamed existed – a world I’ve been totally oblivious to. I meet people who freely show emotion and affection. People who dare make their own choices.

It’s frightening and the opposite of everything I’ve ever known.

Suddenly, I have to fight for my life. I’m thrown into chaos where time is running out to become a skilled fighter who will be an asset for the coming war. But my mind’s bombarded with questions – who’s right and who’s wrong? Which side should I fight on?

I don’t belong in this world filled with cruelty and depravity.

Then there’s Chance, my reluctant trainer. The man is the definition of deadly and so attractive I struggle to think straight around him. I’m also pretty sure he would love nothing more than to snap my neck. Cruel, impatient, and harsh, he’s a brute who seems annoyed by my existence.

Honestly, I’m not sure I will survive living with the deviants, never mind fighting in a war. Unless I find my courage and learn to fight for myself, I fear this new world will crush me.

Dystopian romance is a subgenre I don't see enough of in the romance world. I absolutely love it, so when I heard about this one, I put it on my TBR immediately. If you've ever read Michelle Heard, you know her writing style makes it easy to devour her books in no time. This one was no exception, and I enjoyed every minute of it!

Cruelest Oblivion takes place is a Handmaid's Tale-esque world, and when it began, I thought the heroine, Jai, was going to wind up in the same position as Offred. To my delight, that wasn't the case. Her story takes a much different turn, and I became more intrigued immediately. I don't want to say exactly what happens because spoilers. Let's just say, her eyes are opened to the reality of her home, and she goes on a journey filled with violence, wonder, constant danger, enlightenment, fear, and hope.

Jai and Chance's budding romance is one neither expected to happen. Jai's whole world was turned upside down out of nowhere, and she's just trying to wrap her head around her new reality, find her mother, and stay alive. Chance's main goal in life has always been to free and protect his brother, Ethan, but after Jai and Ethan meet up with him outside of the cult like community they were born into, a rather large wrench gets thrown into his plans leaving him Jai's protector and guide in this scary world where the inhabitants are in a constant fight for survival.

The chemistry between Chance and Jai is strong from the beginning, and though Chance fights his attraction to Jai, his resistance is futile. I can't wait to see their love continue to grow and strengthen in the next installment.
Because of the world building and set up taking up so much of this story, I couldn't help but wish we would have gotten just a little bit more of the romance in this one. I would have loved it if the book was longer, or that instead of a duet, it was a trilogy.

In fact, I found myself making a list of other characters and perspectives I would enjoy reading about. In my opinion, this story could easily be turned into a series. I would love to see books from the point of view of a wife, a breeder, and other characters outside the community, some of which we're introduced to in this book. There is so many possibilities for expansion in this world. I hope the author decides to write more than just this duet. If she does, I'll be first in line to read it!

Dystopian romance fans, this one's for you!
