He was her addiction; she was his everything…
Emma Everly is ready for her happily ever after. James Shaw doesn’t know happiness. But Emma knows that there is more to the brilliant and sexy millionaire project developer. Yearning to experience the world of pleasure that James is offering her, with no strings and no future, Emma agrees to the parameters of his proposition. No love, just sex  —and lots of it. After only one weekend, Emma feels her heart begin to bind to the man, and she knows she needs more, only James’ walls are up and he remains guarded and distant. He’s hiding something. As Emma falls hard and fast, into his intoxicating world of sex and passion, she fears that her own checkered past and James’ secrets may be what’s keeping their happily ever after just beyond their grasp.

I began the Dark and Damaged Hearts series by reading Parts 1 and 2 of Love, Passion, and Power, Justin and Kendra's story. Throughout their books, we were afforded a glimpse of this handsome, slightly grumpy, and rather reserved individual named James Shaw. He intrigued me right away with his brooding ways. I love the broody ones! I just knew he had an interesting story to tell and that I needed to read it. When I found out he was the hero of Sex, Heat, and Hunger, I was sold!

Before I began this book, I may or may not have uttered the words, "James, baby, here I come!" I say that to illustrate the level of excitement I had going into this book. However, I knew that I was also going to have to meet a female along the way that would acquire his affection, and I hoped I would like her as much as I knew I was going to like James. It would have been a total bummer to read James' story and think his girl was a bitch unworthy of him. It turns out that I shouldn't have worried. Emma Everly makes my boy, James happy on a level that I have never seen him, and she gets a gold star for that in my book!

James and Emma were magnetically attracted to each other at their first accidental meeting, but neither of them could have anticipated how serious the both of them would begin to feel for each other. I certainly didn't expect James to go so quickly from just wanting a sex based arrangement to a full on relationship, especially with everything I had seen of him in previous books. They fall for each other hard and fast, and I fell right along with them. The problem with relationships that move along at such a speed is that at some point each other's faults and baggage from previous relationships seem to crash into it with brutal force shattering the bubble around the happy couple. Will James and Emma's love be one that stands the test of time, or will it fizzle out as quickly as it began?

Sex, Heat, and Hunger, Part 1 is very much the story of the beginning of a relationship. I loved the tiny touches the author added into this book that made it seem more like a "real" relationship and not some unrealistic, fairytale bullshit. Once you read the book, you'll know what I mean. We observe Emma and James through their first meeting/date, their first fight, and everything in between. As they learn more about each other, so do we. This installment seemed to be building a solid foundation for their love, and I am thinking the next will be when we see it tested.

Part 1 focuses a lot on Emma's insecurities, background, and fears that plague her due to past experiences, but we don't get the same in depth look into James. We know something is there, but not the whole story. I expect we will discover all of that in Part 2 as well, and I can't wait! I'm predicting it will be much more emotional, so I'm trying to prepare myself. Whitley, you better not hurt my James too badly, or your dm is going to be flooded with angry messages from yours truly. Lol

Now that I'm done threatening you, I would like to applaud you for including the part where Emma explains the necessity of urinating after sex. I have never seen a romance novel discuss this issue before. I wanted to high five you when I read it. Whitley Cox, keeps it real... educating while entertaining, folks!

Bottomline, I enjoyed the first act of James and Emma's story, and I have high hopes for the second! Contemporary romance fans, this one's for you! P.S. I'm diving straight into book 2 when I'm finished with this review, so wish me luck!

He sped up and started hammering into me with measured and deliberate thrusts. Our bodies raged at each other. James thundered into me, and I bucked my hips to meet each powerful lunge, pounding my body against his, stimulating myself with the force of my own movements as much as with the fervor of his. His pelvic bone rubbing my clit into submission.
I closed my eyes and focused on the connection between us, envisioning his thick cock, roped in veins, as it split me open and rammed into my aching core. I dug my nails into his muscular back and wrapped my legs around his hips resting my heels on his taught ass cheeks, feeling them flex and release with each thrust.
He kissed me again, hard, his tongue mimicking the pace of his hips, fucking my mouth as thoroughly as he was fucking my pussy. I could feel my climax building, and I was having a hard time holding on. My need for release was causing my legs to fatigue, and I found it difficult to match his powerful thrusts. The swift and deep pulls of his cock echoed the clenching within my core. I tightened myself around his rod like a fist, and let go.
“Oh, god, oh god, ah… ah, oh… god.” I came apart at the seams, and in a glorious wave of pleasure, my release rippled through me. I pressed my heels harder into his ass trying to push him deeper into me, biting his shoulder at the intensity of it all as he continued to nail me into the mattress.

He stilled for a moment and grunted loudly. “Oh fuck…ah.” Giving a final hard thrust before he poured himself into me, finding his own climax. I continued to clench my muscles, milking his cock for all that it was worth.
