EXCERPT
LAIKYN POV
A KINGDOM OF STARS AND SHADOWS (Stars and Shadows #1) by Holly Renee is coming July 14th!
“I am a prince of Citlali, Starblessed." He spat my name.“I will do as I please.”
I wrapped my arms around my chest and looked to the window. The setting sun was leaving room for nothing but darkness, and it was falling over the sky like a curse.
“Please leave.”
“I am not leaving you alone while you are panicking over whatever Jorah said to you. He is my best friend in this world, but he's also an idiot. He scared you when he shouldn't have.”
“No." I shook my head.“He was right. I have spent my entire life preparing for my betrothal to the crowned prince, and I am a fool to allow the queen to think I am loyal to anything but that.”
A dark smile graced his lips as he shook his head. “You are loyal to my brother?”
“I am.” I lifted my trembling chin as I answered him.
“He is what you want?” He moved closer to me as his dark eyes pierced through me.
“He is my destiny,” I corrected him and took a step back as he moved forward.
“A destiny that makes you wish you were anywhere else.” He chuckled softly just as he moved in front of me. “Tell me, Starblessed. Is it your want for me that makes your breath catch in your throat when I am near or your boredom? If you simply need a man to cure your temptation, then please allow me the pleasure.”
“You can’t say things like that to me.”
His smile deepened as he watched me, and I knew that he wasn’t going to leave unless I made him.
“Your brother can satisfy my temptation just fine.”
His smile dropped as he stepped closer to me still. “I think we both know that is a lie. Unless you close your eyes and imagine that his fingers are mine, I think the only thing my brother will leave you is wanting.”
“The queen is watching me,” I whispered, and Evren simply lifted his stained fingers and ran one over the other before my room was clouded in darkness. Every lamp and the glow of the fire had completely disappeared, and I grasped the post of my bed as I tried to see in front of me.
“What did you do?” My voice trembled with fear and anticipation.
“The queen can only see what I allow her, princess. I may be the bastard prince, but I still have power.”

“Do you have the rings?”
“Oh.” Mac looks back at her purse sitting in the chair. “I do.” She holds up a finger. “Give me just a minute. I’m sorry.”
She drops my hand and sprints over to her bag, bringing out… You’ve got to be joking.
My eyes widen, and I look at the judge, afraid he might actually ask me what the world is in her hand. But he has a better sense of humor than me, fighting off a grin as McKinley steps up and faces me, two black pieces of plastic clutched in her fingers.
“Are those zip ties?” I try to appear like this level of crazy doesn’t scare me.
“Uh-huh.” She smiles tightly. “If they can hold Lu’s bumper, they can hold this marriage together.”
Tomorrow, I will appreciate the thought, but today, I’m just shocked as the judge resumes, instructing each of us to recite vows and zip tie our “rings” on each other’s fingers.
“I now pronounce you husband and wife. Mr. Lexington, you may kiss your bride.”
Hesitation should not be in my wheelhouse. I’m a closer, the best reliever in the bull pen. Being put in stressful situations is my Kool-Aid. But right here, in the middle of the judge’s chambers, my palms start sweating as I reach for my bride, slipping my arms around her hips and pulling them flush with mine. “I’m—”
McKinley’s arms loop around my neck, her lips pressing gently against mine. Her warmth… well, I just react. Gripping her hips, I waste no time taking advantage of her silence…and compliance. Maybe it was zipping that dress, watching as my own hands hid the body my eyes lusted after. She wasn’t mine, not in the sense a normal wife is to her husband, but tell that to my body. A mouth that will one day marry another man after we divorce. A mouth that can’t help but pop off with outlandish comments and argumentative retorts. Yeah, my mind might know this marriage is a sham, but my body—my tongue, using her surprise to slip in, claiming her intimately in front of witnesses—knows we’re in deep. This isn’t a kiss meant for a first date or a deal between friends. The feel of her hands tangling in my hair as she moans deep in her chest is intimate—primal. This is a kiss shared only between a husband and a wife.
And I’m… I’m screwed.
A throat clears. “Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Lexington. You may pick up your certificate at the front desk.”
We finally pull back, McKinley dabbing at her lips, her eyes widening as she stares at me. “Yes, thank you, Your Honor.”
With zip ties on our fingers, we grab our certificate, walk out of the courthouse to the car and shut ourselves inside, both of us silent on the way home.

I knew standing before her, looking into her eyes was going to calm the war raging inside me. But I had no idea her fear was going to be this... addictive.
"Tell me," I demand again as footsteps in the gravel of the parking lot sound out. I've no idea if it's some of tonight's late-night customers or staff, I don't rip my eyes from Peyton's to find out.
I don't need to say anything to warn her against calling out or asking for help. She seems to know that it would be a really bad fucking thing to do.
She swallows once more, her delicate skin rippling against my hand, making me want to tighten my hold to terrify her even more. But I resist, for now.
The door slamming makes me squeal in fright as Kane steps closer to me.
“Scared, Princess?”
“Of you?” I ask with a smirk. Leaning in, I stop right before our noses touch. “Never.”
“Wrong fucking answer, baby.”
His fingers tighten a beat before his lips slam down on mine.
My fingers claw at the hand that’s still holding me around the throat as I keep my lips together, refusing to give into him. We need to talk. We need to act like grown-ups, not sex-crazed teenagers.
“Open your fucking mouth, Princess,” he demands, his lips brush mine and make my mouth water for a taste of him.
Keeping my lips firmly closed, I shake my head.
A growl rumbles deep in his throat causing a surge of heat to flood my core. “Where’s my dirty little whore, huh?”
His hand skims my waist before cupping my breast and pinching my nipple hard.
Exactly as he intended, I gasp and he plunges his tongue into my mouth.
I still resist but it’s futile because we both know I’m not going to be able to keep it up.
“Fight all you like, Princess. You know how hard it gets me.” He grinds his cock into my stomach and my body sags against the wall.
“Yeah, baby. I’ve missed you too.”
His lips kiss and his teeth nip down my jaw, his hand releases my throat, instead wrapping around one side and holding me tight with his fingers in my hair.
“You smell like sin, Princess.”
“Funny, because I was thinking that’s just how you taste.”
“Match made in hell, Princess. I thought you already knew this.”
