There was a time Jude Delouxe didn’t hate me, and I’m fairly certain it was when he didn’t know I existed. Senior year, I finally caught his eye long enough to throw word vomit at him like the obsessed teenage girl I was. That was then. You see, the most wanted guy in school blamed me for losing his second chance with his girlfriend. Ex-girlfriend? Whatever. Point is, the Adonis loved to hate me. It wasn’t my fault he’d followed me. It wasn’t my fault he’d stared too long and stood a little too close, just daring me to accomplish my wildest dreams. And it most certainly wasn’t my fault his ex-girlfriend arrived when he’d decided to kiss me back. Then the cruelty began. I’d thought I could handle it, so long as his lips kept gracing mine and he kept giving me more scorching firsts. Until he took it too far, and all his carefully kept secrets blew open the doors to a brand-new world. A world he was all too familiar with. Obsession became loathing and fear replaced naivety as Jude was forced to hold my hand and help me navigate a secret society rife with sin and debauchery—the crème de la crème of Peridot Island. If I wasn’t careful, I’d do more than lose what remained of my heart. My first love and greatest foe wouldn’t be satisfied until he’d devoured my soul, too.

Ella Fields constantly gives us unique stories full of angst, anger, lust, and love. The emotions she conjures within us, both good and bad, are intense enough to make us scream. Tears, swooning, heart clenching, stomach roiling, and kindle throwing are all expected side effects of her novels, and they're all guaranteed reactions to Evil Love.

Fern and Jude's romance is pretty unconventional, and if you're not a fan of complicated romantic connections, this probably isn't the book for you. Nothing about this story goes the way anyone would want their love story to unfold. It begins with lust and obsession, but also, hate, humiliation, and cruelty.

I kind of love that Fern is damn near a stalker when the book begins. Everyone knows how much I love those obsessive little freaks. Fern is more a lovesick, Jude fangirl than psycho though even if her mini closet shrine would suggest otherwise. Some will call her a doormat, but all I could see was a sweet, slightly crazy, naive teenage girl that wanted something with her whole heart. Jude takes advantage of that, but that's obviously less about shattering her heart than making sure she'll let go of his.

If you're a fan of assholes, Jude's the guy for you, but he still may test your patience. I love that Ella never shies away from making her characters do abhorrent things. She always trusts that we'll see their heart and feel their love in the end. It tends to make her books more exciting for me, because I don't feel like anything is off the table.

I appreciated the personal character development and healing in this one alongside the romance. A good portion of the book was spent with the characters healing from their own personal traumas, and though I know there will be some that wish that wasn't the case, I believe it allowed Fern and Jude to love each other and themselves the way they both deserved. It also allowed them to deepen the familial relationships they had left and make sense of their world and their actions and feelings.

Evil Love set up the Nightingale series perfectly, and I can't wait to read Silas and Coraline's story. If it's not next, I'll be surprised. Ella gave us a taste of their heartache, and now I want to experience it all. Secret societies are always intriguing to me, and I'm ready to delve more into that aspect of things as well.

If you're a fan of enemies to lovers, bully romance, asshole heroes, quirky heroines, secret societies, and twisted love stories, this one's for you!
