I have always been a sucker for love stories about young lovers from different worlds coming together against all odds. When a couple has to make sacrifices and fight for one another, it's guaranteed to make me root harder for their relationship. Throw in an extreme taboo element on top of that, and I'm even more intrigued.
After I learned that one of my favorite authors on the planet-along with another taboo queen- collaborated on such a book, I was sold!
The beginning of Like Dragonflies was exactly what I hoped it would be. The authors slowly painted us a picture of the lives of our hero, Mars, and heroine, Sage . We see that they both have some pretty hefty emotional baggage despite growing up in two completely different families, classes, and towns.
Once Mars and Sage meet, they can't stop thinking about each other. It's as if they finally found someone who understands them in a way no one else ever has. Mars asks Sage out on a date shortly after their first encounter, and in no time, they are inseparable.
When Sage's mother finds out Mars is the one dating her daughter, she drops a bomb on them that neither saw coming....a statement that would change their lives forever. The love they have for one another is strong, but is it strong enough to survive something as gut wrenching and twisted as this?
Before I give you my opinion on the story, I want to say that K Webster and Danielle James make a phenomenal team. Their writing is absolutely seamless, and if I didn't know this book was written by two authors, I never would have been able to tell! That's really saying something coming from me too, because K Webster is my most read author to date. I know her writing style very well, and I'm impressed by how perfectly their writing blended together.
Like Dragonflies is the kind of story that makes you think about what if's you might never consider otherwise. It puts you in the shoes of two people that love one another whole heartedly, and let's you watch as their whole world comes crashing down.
In the end, should they have walked away from each other? I would say yes, as I'm sure most people would, but thinking about how unfair, shocking, and devastating it would be is just fucking sad. I heard of a similiar story in the news once, and I thought about how cruel fate can be sometimes. I can't even imagine the horror or pain those people must have went through after discovering something like that.
Maybe I'm a masochist, but I wanted to feel that more here. I wanted to see more angst and unbearable suffering, because I believe that's what it would have been like in real life. Society as a whole would never accept their relationship, and the consequences of continuing it would have been difficult to deal with to say the least.
That's why this is fantasy though, right?! Things don't have to be completely realistic. The improbable is possible, and the doomed couple gets a chance at a beautiful life.
Mars and Sage's story ends on a sweet note with a happily ever after. Just to be clear, I still enjoyed it despite wanting the fucked up heartbreaking ending. Lol I read the whole book straight through from start to finish, and I liked both of the main characters. If you are at all curious about this one, you should definitely give it a try!
Like Dragonflies is a sweet, unconventional romance I recommend to all fans of taboo romance.
