Review: Breakdown by Aly Zigada

July 20, 2019

"Gritty, unapologetic, and positively filthy! Breakdown rushes through your veins--electric and entertaining--until you're wickedly addicted to this unpredictable love story!" -- USA Today Bestselling Author K. Webster

BREAKDOWN by Aly Zigada is a dark enemies-to-lovers age gap romance that readers are calling "captivating," "gritty," "phenomenal," and "a masterpiece." And it's now live—and free in Kindle Unlimited!

Blurb

An unforgettably searing and unapologetically honest romance about enemies, lovers, and the music that binds them.

Atticus Creed saved my life. His voice talked me down. His lyrics stripped me bare. His tattoos against my hidden scars made me feel beautiful. In turn, I wrecked him with a love that exposed his soul and lies that called to his vilest demons.

We were innocent then.

I’m not a broken girl anymore. Now I’m the woman who reigns over the corrupt record label he abandoned, and he’s a tortured musician who wants retribution as viciously as I want another taste of his lips. Inevitably, he will crash in my arms, and I will burn in his.

Depravity is all we know. It’s in the air we breathe, it’s in our sweat, it’s the music we make.

Breakdown is Aly Zigada's debut novel, but if I didn't know that information going into it, there is no way in hell I would believe that to be true. Though her writing is that of a more seasoned author, that's not the primary reason I made the aforementioned statement. My surprise has more to do with the content of the novel than how it was written. Aly didn't play it safe with this one at all, and it was f@cking refreshing! I gave a whole extra star for that alone! With the way authors can be dragged over the coals sometimes for going outside minimally flawed characters and mild cookie-cutter plots, I'm a little shocked she dove into the deep end the way she did here.

Calling the characters in this book less than perfect would be a gross understatement. They cheat, steal, lie, stab each other in the back, and even murder to get what they want. If there is a healthy relationship in this entire book, I can't recall it.

The story itself is intriguing, twisted, and captivating. The sexual content is plentiful and downright f&cking filthy... which of course means I enjoyed every second of it! I couldn't get enough of these depraved, morally bankrupt characters or their f@cked up tale of family, friendship, romance, and woe. Admittedly, I did get a little confused about certain things at times, but other than that, I completely enjoyed myself.

Breakdown is the most standout debut novel I've read in the past couple of years. If this is where the author is starting, I can't wait to see where she goes in the future. I was already dying for book two after the first chapter. Call me crazy, but I'm always drawn to the most messed up characters of the bunch. I have a strong feeling I'm going to love Imogen and Ezra's story even more than I loved Atticus and Sophie's. We got a pretty great introduction to all the side characters in this installment, and their story was by far the most interesting to me.

If it isn't obvious, this book won't be for everyone. If you're easily offended, or have ever dnfed a book because the couple had a toxic relationship, I would steer clear. If you need your characters to be good people that always make the right decisions, don't give this book a second thought.

However, if you're like me and love gritty, complex romance novels with incredibly imperfect characters, complicated relationships, and dirty sexual encounters aplenty, this one's for you!
